Bodie Ghost Town

Clear blue skies and warm temps saw us hit the road again heading north up 395 in California to Bodie Historical State Park. After a 13 mile dusty, bumpy drive we arrived at this ghost town, one of the best preserved in all of the USA and a town frozen in time.  It really did look like they had just up and left, even the safe was still in the bank.  Over 10000 people lived there in 1880 as they mined the hills for gold and at one stage there were 65 saloons in town!  $75 million in gold was mined and it is said that the town was one of the most furious, vehement, violent and lawless towns in all the Mother Lode.  Law & Order took  a back seat here.  The buildings are now kept in an arrested state of decay meaning they will not deteriorate any further.  It was a great morning out and we were glad of the air con back in the Landcruiser as we headed north to Lake Tahoe.
